Detecting the newest generation of ultra-quiet (diesel-electric) submarines is one of the Navy’s “toughest problems.” In one year, Blue Sky Scientific members modified and enhanced existing sonobuoy hardware, designed and developed a communications network, data management system, signal processing, tracking system, and graphical user interface, and finally conducted sea-trials of the system. The final demonstration achieved real-time submarine tracking of unprecedented accuracy on a previously undetectable target, achieving better performance than several long-running (10 year) submarine detection programs.
The novel design of the Kestrel sensor allows operators to continuously monitor up to 100 square kilometers of terrain using a single aerostat-mounted payload.

A new Army Program Manager (PM Soldier) inherited a high profile program that was about to be canceled (Land Warrior). Blue Sky Scientific team members were brought in to conduct a critical analysis of the program’s technical objectives, identify roadblocks and propose and implement alternative solutions. Prototypes were built and tested, iterated, and produced in quantities sufficient to meet the customer’s test requirements (LW v0.6). The end result was a successful program that is currently ongoing as a fielded hardware system.
A video capture system that generates video from the perspective of the weapon, allowing a soldier to aim and fire a weapon around corners, minimizing exposure to incoming fire. It includes several zoom levels, a method for dynamically adjusting the reticle position and type, and was fully compliant with the Land Warrior ICD. Implementing technologies included FireWire for high-rate video transfers, USB for low-rate control, an 8051 master processor, and a CoolRunner II CPLD for real-time pixel manipulation. In addition to creating the device itself, a Windows driver was implemented for simplified device control. The core components and architecture of this system persist as the foundation for the Land Warrior Daylight Video Sight.
AURORA provides remotely controlled video, illumination, and escalation of force capabilities, developed in partnership with SureFire and PM Solutions.
Additional capabilities include video recording/replay, positioning, mapping, and access to satellite communication. Highly integrated, yet highly adaptable to allow for the addition or substitution of components with minimal disruption (i.e. addition of LWIR thermal imagers, target designators, substitution of Pan/Tilt, etc.)
A custom smartphone platform developed by a major defense contractor.
Blue Sky Scientific provided Linux and Android expertise and resources to port Android to this new high-capability smartphone platform, resolving issues with the android debug bridge (ADB), ALSA, voice stack, SIM card registration, radio interface layer (RIL) and file system organization, allowing the device to be ready for market.
