Distributed Submarine Tracking Technology
Detecting the newest generation of ultra-quiet (diesel-electric) submarines is one of the Navy’s “toughest problems.” In one year, Blue Sky Scientific members modified and enhanced existing sonobuoy hardware, designed and developed a communications network, data management system, signal processing, tracking system, and graphical user interface, and finally conducted sea-trials of the system. The final demonstration achieved real-time submarine tracking of unprecedented accuracy on a previously undetectable target, achieving better performance than several long-running (10 year) submarine detection programs.
Wide Area Persistent Surveillance System
The novel design of the Kestrel sensor allows operators to continuously monitor up to 100 square kilometers of terrain using a single aerostat-mounted payload.

"Big Data" Visualization Framework
A software framework built to find and visualize relationships within a large set of internally generated documents for a Fortune 100 company.
Blue Sky Scientific worked with the company to identify document use cases, determine the most relevant document characteristics, and create a meaningful web-based relationship visualization and navigation application. The final product allowed a user to interact with the document set, navigating through related documents, themes, and topics, and zooming in or out for more "broad" information.
Land Warrior: The US Army’s First Widely-Fielded Soldier System
A new Army Program Manager (PM Soldier) inherited a high profile program that was about to be canceled (Land Warrior). Blue Sky Scientific team members were brought in to conduct a critical analysis of the program’s technical objectives, identify roadblocks and propose and implement alternative solutions. Prototypes were built and tested, iterated, and produced in quantities sufficient to meet the customer’s test requirements (LW v0.6). The end result was a successful program that is currently ongoing as a fielded hardware system.
Optical Switching MEMs Test Station
A software suite built to automate MEMs wafer testing during production for an optical switching startup.
System performs closed-loop testing on individual wafers by injecting control signals to exercise the wafer and analyze the resulting video. Wafer elements were exercised and graded in parallel, with complete test results overlaid on the operator GUI and stored to a database for later analysis or replay.
The real-time image tracking algorithms used to characterize wafer performance incorporated a signal processing chain with steps for image filtering, background normalization, and finally motion estimation using rational functions to construct equations of motion for individual MEMs elements.
Weapon-Mounted Digital Video Capture and Processing System
A video capture system that generates video from the perspective of the weapon, allowing a soldier to aim and fire a weapon around corners, minimizing exposure to incoming fire. It includes several zoom levels, a method for dynamically adjusting the reticle position and type, and was fully compliant with the Land Warrior ICD. Implementing technologies included FireWire for high-rate video transfers, USB for low-rate control, an 8051 master processor, and a CoolRunner II CPLD for real-time pixel manipulation. In addition to creating the device itself, a Windows driver was implemented for simplified device control. The core components and architecture of this system persist as the foundation for the Land Warrior Daylight Video Sight.
AURORA provides remotely controlled video, illumination, and escalation of force capabilities, developed in partnership with SureFire and PM Solutions.
Additional capabilities include video recording/replay, positioning, mapping, and access to satellite communication. Highly integrated, yet highly adaptable to allow for the addition or substitution of components with minimal disruption (i.e. addition of LWIR thermal imagers, target designators, substitution of Pan/Tilt, etc.)
Mobile Biometrics Enrollment and Authentication
A biometric security prototype was created in less than one week, integrating a CMOS capacitive fingerprint sensor, megapixel compactflash camera, wireless network, and smartcard interface module with a mobile device. The mobile device was able to register new trusted individuals by recording their picture, key descriptive information (name, age, address, etc.), and biometric signature both within a device-resident database and writing it to a smartcard. Thereafter, the individual could be identified (by fingerprint) within the database, authenticated against the data stored in the smartcard, and queried against authentication devices available within the network.
Two-Factor Authentication Framework
Rapid development and demonstration of a Two-Factor Authentication framework to enable highly granular OS file and website access permissions.
Developed for a Fortune 100 company, Blue Sky Scientific was able to provide an administrative application, Windows service, NTFS minifilter interface, and IE-compatible ActiveX plugin to provide these capabilities.
Custom Hardware Android Platform
A custom smartphone platform developed by a major defense contractor.
Blue Sky Scientific provided Linux and Android expertise and resources to port Android to this new high-capability smartphone platform, resolving issues with the android debug bridge (ADB), ALSA, voice stack, SIM card registration, radio interface layer (RIL) and file system organization, allowing the device to be ready for market.
